Cancun is both a thriving nightlife hub and a gateway to the mystical world of the Maya. Visitors interested in a full cultural experience can venture out to the famous Chichen Itza, home of the mighty Pyramid Kukulcan, or the lesser known Mayapan, which is considered to be the last great Maya capital. When you've conquered these two ruins, there are a dozen more to choose from; the Mayan adventure never ends!

Destination

Long before it became a world-famous balneario, Cancun was a Mayan village. The name the Mayans gave the island means "Enchanted Snake". After the native population gradually departed, Cancun was essentially untouched for over four hundred years. Then, in 1970, the Mexican government took a risky gamble on the area and financed the construction of nine major hotels there. The rest is history, and today, after surviving the wrath of Hurricane Gilbert back in 1988, Cancun is an extremely popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant night clubs, and safe tourist environment.

The Yucatan Peninsula holds the last remnants of the once-mighty Mayan civilization within its leafy tropical grasp. The famous Chichen Itza has eighteen ancient structures, the tallest of which is Pyramid Kulkulcan. During the spring and fall equinoxes, the setting sun creates shadows down the steps of the pyramid that resemble a slithering snake. Other fascinating and storied ruins in the area include Muyil, Tulum, and Uxmal.
